About Road Traffic Act Sampling Kits

There are two national consumable kits available for the taking of specimens from individuals arrested under the Road Traffic Act 1988, Transport and Works Act 1992, Railway and Transport Safety Act 2003 & Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1995. One is for the collection of blood specimens and the other is for the collection of urine specimens.

These kits should only be used by Police Forces for the collection of blood/urine specimens from drivers/workers suspected of being over the prescribed alcohol limit, having a drug in excess of the specified limit or being unfit through alcohol and/or drugs.

How to Take Blood and Urine Specimens

Procedures governing the collection of the specimens are outlined in the Manual of Guidance Drink and Drug Driving (MGDD) series of forms in England and Wales (or PSNI DD in Northern Ireland).  These instructions should be carefully adhered to, to ensure compliance with the provisions of the relevant legislation for the transport type(s) under investigation.

Specimen(s) should be forwarded for forensic analysis together with the appropriate authorisation and MGDD forms in accordance with local Force procedure. Documentation may be in paper or electronic form.
